It’s not too late to build a summer planter!
You might be thinking the end of July is too late to get a summer planter going – not true! Now is as good a time as any to get started.
First task at hand, pick out the perfect pot. Keep in mind where you’ll be putting your planter, as well as your personal style. Do you want your pot to match the rustic exterior of your home, or stand out with a modern twist? Think of your planter as a mini-landscape full of self expression. The options are endless!
Once you’ve hand picked the perfect pot, it’s time to decide what to fill it with. This can seem a bit daunting with the many flower and foliage options, but don’t despair, we are here to help you. If you’d like to fill the pot with a fresh new batch of flowers every year, then annuals are the way to go. If you’re looking for something more permanent, we’d suggest going with tropicals which can happily live outside for the summer and then be brought inside for the winter. Make sure you’re using a nutrient-rich soil for your planter. We have a couple of great potting soil mixes available that are composed of soil, compost, and fertilizer. This will give your flowers the added boost they need!
The next thing to determine is where your pot will be located – is this an exceptionally sunny spot, or a shady location? This is key in deciding which plants to fill it with, providing the most successful results.
For our planter, we’ve selected a variety of sunny annuals. We’ve picked a couple of Bee-friendly annuals. They all require the same amount of watering, which provides an easy ‘one size fits all’ watering method. Varying heights of plants by using tall, medium and cascading varieties, can add a dramatic flair to help spice things up. The sky is the limit! If you’re not sure which plants and flowers to pair together, our knowledgeable staff is always happy to help steer you in the right direction!
Planting is next. Where your planter will sit, determines where you should start. If your planter will be positioned against a wall, then start planting from the back of the pot and work your way forward. This allows you to position the tallest plants in the back without hiding any of your shorter growth. If your planter will be in the centre of a walkway, or out in the open, then we recommend you start your planter from the centre and work your way out. Remember to check the view from above to make sure you have even spacing, ending with any creepers and cascaders at the outer edge to emphasize their beauty.
Once your plants are firmly planted in your pot, make sure you give them a good watering. This will help the roots establish, while also solidifying the plants within the pot.
